College-entrance exam dates are just around the corner with the ACT coming up first on February 9th. Be sure to register by Friday, January 11th if you’re interested in taking the ACT in February and don’t want to pay a late registration fee – you will have two other chances to take it before the school year ends.
If you don’t know which tests you should take, consult the school you are interested in applying to and see what exams they require for admission. The SAT is the traditional exam and most schools will accept SAT scores. Many colleges and universities, however, are also interested in ACT and SAT Subject scores, especially if you are considering a major that specializes in a specific topic like science, math, or language. Both the SAT and SAT Subject exams are administered by the College Board while the ACT was developed by ACT, Inc. to provide a test of a student’s academic achievement, mastery of skills, and overall knowledge taught in schools. The ACT is the only college entrance exam that includes a science evaluation. At Excel, we recommend that students take both the SAT and the ACT exams and submit their higher score – or both scores if they are both great!
SAT Subject tests measure a student’s ability in a specific discipline and are great for anyone interested in a career or degree as a specialist such as a chemist, a linguist, or an accountant. They can also be helpful if you struggle with most subjects but excel in a particular subject like math, you can take the exam in the subject you are confident in so colleges can see your ability in that specific topic without drawing attention to your weaknesses.
If you are taking advanced high school courses, you also have the option to take AP exams, which are being administered this year in May for two weeks. Anyone interested in signing up for AP exams should speak with a counselor or representative at their high school who can guide them through the process of signing up for the exam(s) at the beginning of the school year.
