Volunteering is a great way to broaden your horizons and can be rewarding in many ways.  Donating your time is free and can go towards really benefitting others that need a helping hand.  Often times we don’t think about the struggles of life until we are knee-deep in them, but eventually we all need some kind of help at some point in our lives.  With that in mind, be proactive and help others sooner rather than later if you can.

By choosing to be a volunteer, you are opening the door to changing other people’s lives for the better.  Amongst its many other benefits, volunteering is a great way to jump start your career.  Before you can intern or get a paying job, consider volunteering as a way to gain work experiences and references for when you begin building your career.  People are more willing to hire someone when they don’t have to pay them and it is an easy way to get your foot in the door of a company that you are interested in.  Over time, they may offer you a paid position or give you the opportunity to meet someone in the industry that will.

Donating your time can also expose you to experiences you never would have planned on having.  You will get to meet new and different people that all have different stories.  Plus, the people that you meet through volunteering generally have a different kind of energy as it’s not something they have to do, it’s something they choose to do.  The morale of volunteers is incredibly different than the morale of people working at a paid job.  You might even meet people that can be mentors for you in other aspects of your life.  By simply getting out of your normal environment and trying something different you are opening the door to multiple opportunities and endless paths.

On top of all of that good that you’ll be feeling inside, volunteering is very helpful to others that can’t afford help, whether directly or indirectly.  Foundations are regularly made available to help give back to the community, but a lot of the times it is hard to find people willing to stop in and help for free.  Many foundations can’t afford to pay people and are run solely on the generosity of others.  Often times, people that have been through something difficult themselves are more gracious in giving back to others as they remember how grateful they were when a kind hand was extended to them.  Let’s not wait until we all need help before we start helping each other.  Build skills, relationships, and good karma by volunteering!
